Julian Cope was probably best known as the lead singer of the neo-psychedelic band the Teardrop Explodes. After he left that band, he went on a solo career, which produced this single, one of my favorite from the mid-to-late 1980s. It's the perfect pop single--both A and B sides--but in the U.S., "World Shut Your Mouth" only reached No. 84 on the Hot 100 in 1987. Go figure.
